JAZZ ON A SUMMER’S DAY: ОТКРИВАНЕ НА ANALOG ROOM

FIRST TIME IN BULGARIA FILM SCREENING

On 10 and 11 October, we open the doors to Analog Room — the new space at In The Mood Jazz Club, dedicated to cinema, music and the art of attentive listening.
Analog Room brings together two distinct spaces: a boutique 16-seat cinema and a separate Listening Room.

In the cinema, we will present carefully selected music documentaries, feature films and classic cinema — through digital screenings and authentic analogue film projection. The Listening Room will host listening sessions and album presentations on vinyl and CD, encounters with artists, small exhibitions and discoveries from rare archives.

Two spaces with one shared idea — encounters with music, cinema and art, where image and sound deserve our full attention.

For our first screening, we have chosen one of the most beautiful music films ever made — Jazz on a Summer’s Day by Bert Stern and Aram Avakian. A film in which music and cinema come together naturally, while Bert Stern’s photographic eye transforms live performance into art on screen. We could hardly imagine an opening more closely aligned with the spirit of In The Mood.

Filmed at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, Jazz on a Summer’s Day transports viewers to coastal Newport — among sailboats, summer streets and an audience whose rhythm gradually merges with that of the stage. The camera captures the musicians’ gestures, the listeners’ expressions and the small but precious moments surrounding the performances. From these, Stern creates a vivid, poetic portrait of music and the people it brings together.

The film brings Thelonious Monk, Louis Armstrong, Anita O’Day, Dinah Washington, Gerry Mulligan, Chuck Berry, Chico Hamilton with Eric Dolphy, Mahalia Jackson and many more legendary musicians together on screen.

Behind this distinctive vision is Bert Stern — an American photographer who made a significant contribution to advertising, fashion and portrait photography. Among his most recognisable works is The Last Sitting, his series of photographs of Marilyn Monroe taken in 1962. His work also includes portraits of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. In Jazz on a Summer’s Day, his sensitivity to composition, colour and human presence gives the concert performances an extraordinary cinematic life.

Filmed in 1958 and restored in 4K by IndieCollect in 2019, the film will be screened in 4K — a rare opportunity to fully experience the richness of the original imagery and the detail of Stern’s photographic vision.

With this screening, we expand the world of In The Mood. The music we experience live in our concert room takes on another dimension on screen — as memory, imagery and inspiration.

Just 16 seats and three screenings — on 10, 11 and 17 October. With Jazz on a Summer’s Day, we launch Analog Cinema and a carefully curated film programme for discerning audiences, in the intimate atmosphere of our boutique cinema.
