We are opening the doors to Analog Room — the new space at In The Mood Jazz Club dedicated to cinema, music and the art of attentive listening.
Analog Room brings together two distinct spaces: a boutique cinema with 16 seats and a separate Listening Room.
The cinema will present carefully selected music films, feature films and cinema classics — through digital screenings and the authentic analogue experience of projection on film. The Listening Room will be a place for listening sessions and album presentations on vinyl and CD, conversations with artists, small exhibitions and the discovery of rare archival gems.
Two spaces with one shared idea — encounters with music, cinema and art, where image and sound deserve our undivided attention.
For our first screening, we have chosen one of the most beautiful music films ever made — Jazz on a Summer’s Day by Bert Stern and Aram Avakian. A film in which music and cinema intertwine naturally, while Bert Stern’s photographic eye transforms live performance into art on screen. We could hardly imagine an opening more closely aligned with the spirit of In The Mood.
Filmed at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958, Jazz on a Summer’s Day transports viewers to coastal Newport — amid sailboats, summer streets and an audience whose rhythm gradually merges with that of the stage. The camera captures the musicians’ gestures, the listeners’ expressions and the small yet precious moments surrounding the performances. From these, Stern creates a vivid, poetic portrait of music and the people it brings together.
The film brings Thelonious Monk, Louis Armstrong, Anita O’Day, Dinah Washington, Gerry Mulligan, Chuck Berry, Chico Hamilton with Eric Dolphy, Mahalia Jackson and other legendary musicians together on screen.
Behind this vision is Bert Stern — an American photographer who made a significant contribution to advertising, fashion and portrait photography. Among his most recognisable works is The Last Sitting, his series of photographs of Marilyn Monroe taken in 1962. His work also includes portraits of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. In Jazz on a Summer’s Day, his sense of composition, colour and human presence gives the concert performances an extraordinary cinematic vitality.
Shot in 1958 and restored in 4K by IndieCollect in 2019, the film will be presented in 4K resolution — a rare opportunity to fully experience the richness of the original imagery and the detail of Stern’s photographic vision.
With this screening, we expand the world of In The Mood. The music we encounter live in our concert hall takes on another dimension on screen — as memory, imagery and inspiration.
