How does our experience of an album change when its creator shares the stories behind the compositions and the creative decisions that shaped them?

On 24 October, we invite you to the newly opened Analog Room at In The Mood Jazz Club for a special presentation of Space Game – the debut album by KVINTAKORD, the international jazz project founded by Bulgarian drummer and composer Aleksandar Ivanov.

We will listen to the album on CD through Analog Room’s audiophile sound system, while Aleksandar Ivanov takes us into the world of his compositions and shares the story of how the album came to life. An opportunity to make time for the music, the details in the sound and a conversation with its creator.

Based in Amsterdam, KVINTAKORD brings together five young musicians from Bulgaria, Portugal, Spain and Germany. Aleksandar Ivanov – drums and compositions, Simão Duque – trumpet, Julián Garvayo – trombone, David Urban – piano, and David Guerreiro – double bass create a contemporary jazz sound rooted in clear, unpretentious melodic lines. Their simplicity is a deliberate compositional choice – an invitation for each listener to find their own emotional connection with the music. Tenor saxophonist Yehorii Uzhva also joins the quintet on the recording of “Damascus”.

The name KVINTAKORD refers to one of the fundamental structures in musical harmony – the triad, capable of expressing different emotions with just a few notes. This idea of direct emotional impact also lies at the heart of the project: music in which minimalist melodic lines leave room for emotion, while improvisation explores its possibilities.

Born in Sofia, Aleksandar Ivanov graduated from the National School of Music, specialising in classical percussion, before continuing his studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he further developed his work as a performer and composer. Contemporary jazz is the starting point for his creative work, while his knowledge of traditional Bulgarian rhythms enriches his approach to composition.

Located on the second floor of In The Mood, Analog Room is a boutique space for cinema, attentive music listening and visual arts, where encounters with artists and conversation form part of the experience. The presentation of Space Game also reflects one of the ideas behind its programme: to give attention and space to young Bulgarian composers, their recordings and the international collaborations through which their music reaches beyond borders.

Join us to discover an album in its entirety, hear the composer’s perspective and make time for questions, impressions and conversation.

SPACE GAME – the music and the stories behind it, shared by Aleksandar Ivanov.
